Handwriting Books and more!

We started in our Handwriting Books. Last week we talked about pencil grip. Some of our students are working on changing their grip using their thumb, pointer and middle finger to grasp the pencil. Today, we started to talk about letters that require a frog jump, meaning having to lift the pencil to create the letter. We did F and E today.

Once a week, we watch a Mystery Doug video. Doug makes videos about a science topic. The students love these videos. Today, we learned how gold is made. Each week, we vote out of three choices for the next week.

In math, we continue working on counting and deepening our number foundation. Students played a partner game today.

Last week in math, we played a dice game where students counted teddy bears.

Students are continuing to learn our routines for center time. We are working on staying at voice volume 0, while Mrs. McGee words with small groups of students at her table.

During interactive writing, students create a sentence with our sight words and come up to help write it on the board. We focus on writing our sight words, using beginning sounds, and sentence structure.

During our phonics time, we learned that there are certain pathways to make our letters. Students have been tracing their letters. We are focusing on writing our letters correctly. We also continue to celebrate everyone's names and study them closely looking at vowels, consonants, syllables and letter sounds.

During our class meeting on Friday, we read the book Listening to My Body. It walked us through how it is ok to feel different feelings. We practiced different activities that made our bodies feel different sensations. We talked about how important it is to listen to your body and what we can do to make our bodies feel peaceful and calm.

In reading, we continue to read classic storybooks. Today we read The Carrot Seed. We learned that when we read storybooks, we want to sound like the characters. I have modeled this for the students while reading aloud. We also learned today to look carefully at the text and if there are a lot of words, we say a lot and vise versa if there are a few words on the page.
