KG Virtual Learning 3/31

Here is my morning message. Here are the plans for this week. Extra KG resources can be found here. Parents, please fill out the survey to let us know how things are going.

I added a new Flipgrid challenge today!

We have a Class Zoom call today at 11:00am. Click here to join. The password is kgzoom. We will have one every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00. I've sent you invitations for you to add to your calendars for this week.

For Flipgrid, I added student passwords. The passwords are just the student's first name. I also have added QR codes so you can download the app on devices and the student can scan their qr code on their own and participate in these challenges. When you are adding videos to our KG FlipGrid, students can comment on their friend's videos by clicking the comment green circle button under the video. It is fun to leave comments for each other. Please try and get your child connected to Flipgrid as it's a wonderful way to stay connected.

Watch this video tutorial on how to use Flipgrid!

The video is for parents and students to watch and learn so we can interact more.

Here is a link to sign up for individual Zoom calls for the next few weeks. Once you sign up, I will send you an invite for your day and time. These are not mandatory, just if you feel it would be helpful or motivating for your child to connect with me one on one. They can read to me, show me their writing or math work, and talk to me about their homeschool experience so far.

Thank you for all your support in helping our virtual school become our current reality.

KG Virtual Learning 3/27

Click here for the morning message.

Today, at 11:00 we will ZOOM together. This means you can join me on video conferencing so we can all see each other. The theme today will be Show and Tell! Therefore, have your child ready to share something from home. Remind your child that they need to listen to me give directions, otherwise it be tricky. The link is https://zoom.us/j/262428776 to join. You may need to download Zoom to get it working, so start setting it up closer to 10:45 to get it all working. I hope to see as many of you as I can!

ZOOM was so much fun! I hope your child enjoyed it. I hope if you missed it you can join the next one.

Here are next week's virtual learning lesson plans.

Parents, please fill out this survey to let us know how the virtual learning experience is going. We need your feedback so we can improve for future learning.

We hope your kindergartener and siblings are enjoying these read alouds we have been adding daily.

If you can show your child the Flipgrid challenges, it will be very exciting for them to see their friends in the video clips added. The flipcode is kgactivities should you need it.

Here is the spirit week poster from our superintendent.

My boys have been adjusting to getting their work done in the mornings.

Lucy has been dressing up,  painting, swinging and trying to bother her brothers in typical 3 year old fashion!

Happy Friday KG!

KG Virtual Learning 3/26

Here is my morning message.

Well, I can say from the parent perspective, the schooling part was challenging yesterday, but recess was MUCH easier with yesterday's beautiful day! My kids do not really want to do work for me very easily as I am mom and not their teacher. However, it should become the new normal and they will adjust. If you want to Facetime me to try and motivate your child, please do. Just text me at 985-789-4633 and let me know so we can set up a time.

Here is a checklist you can print that might help to write down the expectations for the day and then your child can check it off when they are finished. I am going to try this with my kids as it will be a good visual

Be sure to check out the KG Resources page as I've added more resources and extra math practice and enrichment pages from our recent chapters we've learned at school. These may be a bit more challenging than what the district provided us.

Here is the latest challenge on Flipgrid! It is so fun to see all your videos. Keep up with the challenges!

Have a wonderful day KG!

Virtual Learning Begins: Information Attached

Hi KG Families,

Thank you for being patient as we navigate how to provide online instruction for the next month.

Here are the Virtual Learning Lesson Plans for this week. Every Friday we will send out plans for the following week. All OB kindergarten families are receiving the same plans for consistency. We hope this layout is simple to follow. It is laid out by day and not every subject is to be done every day as you can see. The links are embedded so just click to access. Paper copies of the math packets are available to pick up at OB daily from 10:30-12:30. Completed work does not need to be turned in. However, you can email or text me a screenshot to show me so I can provide positive praise for your child. Here is a list of additional resources should you want to add more to your daily instruction.

As I mentioned previously, I will also be putting up FlipGrid challenges each day. This is a way for your child to still feel connected with me and their classmates. Click on this link to get to our flipgrid. There is a drop down menu of Topics to toggle in between the various challenges I've provided. I'll provide at least one each day.

Here are the QR codes you can use to access other apps and resources on Clever. These are resources our school has a subscription too. Cut out your badge and practice scanning to access.

I am available daily from 8:30-4:00 for questions and support. Please text or email me at any time. I am at home attempting to home school my three children as well!

Thank you to our Ladue administration, our principals, my kindergarten teammates, all KG families and our technology specialist for all their constant support to make all this happen. Together, we are making this happen.

Sincerely,

Caroline McGee

Week 30- eLearning

Hi KG Families,

This is a new adventure for all of us! We are in this together and will do our best to provide you with resources and assignments to keep your child growing and learning. Lessons will be coming Wednesday morning for you. They are laid out for each day of the week. Every subject is not required every day. The district has provided guidelines and we have created activities within them. Please make your sure child has watched this video so they can see me! I miss them dearly and will try and set up a video chat some time this week to see them through Zoom.

Also, I am trying this website/app called FlipGrid to give challenges to your child. They can respond with a video and all see each other's responses. Click here to get started! This is completely optional.

Here is a story your child can watch me read. There will be many more posted in a folder for you to access, but I will also post them on here for you as well.

Feel free to send me pictures of your child this week and I can share on here for everyone to see one another.

Week 29

Happy Spring Break! It was such a pleasure meeting with all of you and and sharing how much progress your child has made.

Please read the OB Newsletter.

Take a look at the information that came home about the American Heart Association. Students will be jumping rope and raising money for this foundation to save lives.

This week we looked at this picture. One boy took the ball from the other child. We talked about what to do if someone takes something from you. We talked about solutions possible for this situation. The boy was frustrated but stopped and thought about what to do, and he asked the boy if they wanted to play together.

One book we read this week is These Hands. It was about a grandpa that taught his grandson how to do so many things with his hands like play piano, tie shoes and hit a line drive. Then, he explained that he wasn't allowed to knead bread dough when he was younger because of his skin color. He explained to the boy how they marched and wrote petitions and were able to change the rules at the factory to allow everyone to do all the various jobs. The students really enjoyed the story and we had a great discussion afterwards.

For morning work this week, we worked on our math facts up to 5 as well as what numbers together make 10.

In reading this week, we talked more about avid reading, but using non-fiction stories. We learned that when you read non-fiction books, readers say wow when they learn new things, readers form questions they wonder, and students see fancy words that are possible new vocabulary words. We talked about the glossary at the back of the book as well.

This week during literacy centers, students read individually to me so I could measure their reading level and make sure they are book shopping for appropriate books and that I am providing the right instruction for my small groups.

In phonics (word work), we moved on to a new unit. We looked at pictures and had to decide what sounds we might hear and use our letter sound knowledge to create sound effects in speech bubbles. We looked at some poems as well and even performed them in small groups!

In art class, they are making fans! Mrs. Roth sent me this fun picture. This year students are working on art from Asia. If you've been up to Old Bonhomme, you have seen the amazing Asian artwork the students have produced. We are so lucky to have Mrs. Roth as our art teacher. Follow Mrs. Roth on Instagram @obartstudio.

In math, we worked on learning various strategies to add numbers to together. We drew pictures, used number lines, used mental math, and counted up. Students used dice to add numbers together.

In writing this week, we worked on writing letters. The letters had to be about a problem that they have at school or home. Students amazed me with their letters this week. I shared them with you conferences! These students are writing complete sentences that make sense and using lowercase letters and excellent spacing. Way to go KG writers!

As we all know, COVID 19 is all over the news, and the facts and recommendations are changing every day. We all need to be cautious of what we say and the news we expose to our children.

Also, there are all sorts of rumors swirling around about school cancellations.  I am planning on seeing everyone on Monday, March 23rd!  However, just in case our vacation is extended, OB is sending home with all students the home access information for Clever, etc. so that you have it to access resources.

Please keep it in a safe place and have a relaxing spring break.
