I Am Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving KG Families!

I am so thankful for all of you, especially your kindergartner.

Calendar: During calendar, we continue to talk about days of the week, months and look at patterns on the calendar pieces. We also keep track of how many days we have been in school with paperclips and on a hundreds chart. We now are using the date to show on ten frames.

Math: We are learning about 10 frames, which is the framework for ones and tens places. We are learning more about teen numbers and the ten frames help us understand that 10 and 1 make 11 etc...

Thanksgiving: This week we learned about Thanksgiving and why we celebrate. We talked a lot about what we are thankful for and why.

Second Steps: This week we talked more about acknowledging how we feel and how to calm down. We practiced stopping, naming our feelings, and calming down by breathing, counting or using positive self talk.

SOAR Rewards: Today we watched Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving and yesterday we earned playing at Stacy Park. Lots of strong choices equal lots of positive rewards!

Let It Snow!

Second Steps: This week our lesson talked about identifying physical clues in our bodies to identify how we are feeling. We talked about how all feelings are natural and it is important to talk to a trusted grown up to let them know how you are feeling. We examined how this girl was feeling and talked about how she was feeling and what she could do to help her feel better. She decided to talk to her teacher and her teacher came up with an activity to help her feel better.

Today we read A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue. I try to pick a book that is relevant to our class and recently students have done lots of telling on each other. In this book, there are four main rules the boy learns.

1. Only report to the teacher if someone is in danger or being harmed or bullied (repetitive behaviors)
2. Try to solve the problem yourself. Tell the person how it made you feel.
3. Does the teacher need to know about it now in this moment? Or can it wait till later?
4. If the problem doesn't involve you, you should not be the one telling.

We talked about this and reflected on this book as a class. The students enjoyed it and it will be a good book to refer to when comparing tattling vs. reporting.

Reading: In reading this week, I continued to model strategies to use when solving tricky words. We've talked a lot about saying what sounds right and using a word that would make the sentence complete. I have modeled reading books and covering tricky words to see if students can predict the word within the context. Students continue to practice reading out of their book box each week with books that are just right for them.

Math: This week we learned about ten frames. We practice making bigger numbers (11, 12) with our fingers with a partner. We filled in ten frames to make bigger numbers.

Writing: This week we met with our 4th grade writing partners again! Each 4th grader received stickers with words of encouragement to place on the kindergarteners writing. The stickers complemented using their spaces, neat letters, using periods etc...

This week we worked on writing pattern books in class. A pattern book uses our sight words to form simple sentences. I modeled writing simple books with a theme. For example, I wrote a book about farm animals. The book followed a pattern: I see a farm. I see a horse. I see a cow. I see a chicken. I see lots of animals on the farm. The students are doing an excellent job with their patterns. These books will come home soon for your child to share with you!

Choice Time: Students love to build and create during choice time! I love watching them work together and sort through peer conflicts.

PE: On Wednesday, students had the opportunity to Walk in the Park with the coaches during PE. They walked around the path with Coach Jander and Coach Prange!

SNOW DAY: I hope you had fun on your snow day Thursday. We had a blast sledding all day long!!!

Thank you for your donations for our upcoming Giving Assembly on Tuesday.

On Monday, we will head over to Stacy Park for our SOAR class reward! Thank you for getting in the permission slips so quickly.

A friendly reminder that we only have school on Monday and Tuesday next week before Thanksgiving Break. I hope you enjoy your time with your family this season. I know I am so thankful for my family and my OB family, which includes you!
