Guided Reading

Students are now able to work independently at literacy centers while I pull small groups and work with them on their instructional reading level. Students are taught reading strategies and do word work activities to help them become better readers. Some of the literacy centers are: Independent/Partner Reading, Sight Words, ABC activities, Beginning Sounds, Theme activity, Writing, Listening to books on tape, iPad literacy apps.

Writing Partners

This week students have worked with their writing partner to help create a plan for their writing. Partners are also supposed to ask questions to help their peers add more pictures and/or words to their writing. We've been talking about how authors always have a plan and go back and add more to their stories!

Math Partners

Today we worked on the terms "greater than" and "less than." Students were paired together and had to each make a tower with connecting cubes and compare. They had to use the phrase "My 8 is greater than your 2" or "My 4 is less than your 6."

Handwriting

Students have started working in their Handwriting Without Tears books this week. I model how to correctly form the letter up on the SmartBoard and students practice in their books. We have completed F, D, and E so far.

Choice Time

During choice time, students make a choice from four options in the classroom. This is much more than just play time. Students build social skills and problem solving skills. All students are encouraged to play with friends during this time. Ask your child about their choices during this time at the end of our days. Here is an excellent article from a kindergarten teacher talking more extensively about "choice time." http://learningattheprimarypond.com/blog/play-in-kindergarten/

Learning Sight Words

Students are learning two new sight words a week in KG! We start off by reading a poem and students come to the board to highlight the word in the poem. They later do it on paper and glue it in to their poetry notebook and illustrate. After the poem, students practice writing the sight word many times on paper and whiteboards. Students are starting to notice these words in the text they are reading in class. It is very exciting to see the kindergarten students recognizing new words in environmental print all around them!

Partner Reading

This week students in KG are learning what it looks like to read independently and read with a partner. We talked about see/saw reading, taking turns reading the words or creating your own words that go with the picture.
