We are avid readers!

Last week for our Second Steps lesson we covered the bottom picture which was all about inclusion. The boy in the background wanted to play and the girl would not allow him. The other boy stood up and said it was not right and asked her to play. We talked about how this happens at recess and how it makes us feel to not be included.

We read Listening with my Heart on Friday which was all about a girl who realized she needed to show more compassion to herself. It was a good reminder that we must show empathy to others and ourselves. Sometimes we are too hard on ourself.

Last week, we started our Avid Readers unit. We talked all about what it means to be an avid reader and practiced all week. We looked at pictures and sorted them into piles of students who were avid readers and not avid readers.

We learned that Avid Readers feel what the characters are feeling. As we read our books, we wrote on post it notes how the characters are feeling and shared with our partners. .

Last week in math, we learned all about adding two groups of numbers together. We learned that how many in all is asking us to combine groups. We practiced using number lines to combine two sets of numbers. We learned how to count on using our fingers as well whispering the number in our head then counting up to see how many we have in all.

In writing, we start our persuasive writing. We are identifying problems in our classroom and writing ways we can fix these problems. Students have written in different forms including signs, letters and essay.

We also did a special writing project making a class book to honor Mr. Woolfolk, our school custodian, for all his hard work over the past 20 years here at OB!

Remember, there are more auction items available! These are always such fun memories for students to make with their teachers. Click here to go to the site.
