Week 8 News

Second Steps: This week we continued to talk about feelings. This week we looked at the feelings of being surprised, interested, afraid and scared. We talked about what these feelings look like and how we all react differently to different scenarios. I shared different scenarios and students shared how they might feel.

We start Friday morning with our comlimen circle. The students go around and choose whether they want to give or receive a compliment. It is a great way to fill each other's buckets! Then, we read What Were You Thinking? This story was all about a boy who struggled to control his impulses, until the end when another kid thew his Jello at his face. He saw another student who was struggling and didn't want to be like him. He learned to stop and think about whether his actions would make the situation better or worse. We had a great discussion about how sometimes its hard to control our impulses, but that only our brains can control us so we have to be in control of our brains.

Calendar: During calendar we continue to work on one less, one more...

and counting the days we have been in school. We are starting to count by tens!

Brain break! Count to 100!

We have snack every day at 2:00. Students enjoy eating their snack while listening to a story read by me or aloud on the SmartBoard.

Writing: We started a new writing unit this week called Show and Tell. It encourages students to share some of our favorite things at home. We are learning to draw and write more on each page, visualize what we want to draw and write in our minds, and return to our stories to add more!

Literacy Centers:

Students read books on A-Z Kids and EPIC! You can download these apps at home on your devices too.

Students worked on sorting words by beginning sounds and others worked on writing CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant).

Students worked on the sight words you and do this week.

At the independent reading center, students listened to books on the CD player.

Math: This week we spent two days talking about the vocabulary words having to do wth size, length and weight. We did some activities on the board and in our activity books to make sure we had a solid understanding of these concepts. Today, we started our next chapter on composing and decomposing numbers. We talked about how two numbers can make one number. I gave students a number and I drew some circles. They had to figure out how many more circles were needed to make the number.
