Week 1- First Week of Kindergarten!

Please read the OB Newsletter. It has lots of important information that us teachers don't always share.

Reminders:

- Please have your child bring in a small towel or blanket for rest time. Please no pillows or stuffies. They will come home on next Friday to be washed. We didn't have time to pack them up today.

- Please send in a family photo in a frame for our shelf so you can be with us each day!

- Please do not allow your child to bring toys from home to school

- Please pack lunch and snack separate. The lunchboxes do not come back to our room typically till end of day. Therefore, if you could pack the snack in a small container in the backpack, it would be helpful for your child.

KG Families,

What an amazing first week of kindergarten. I hope your child came home happy and looking forward to coming back next week!

We've had lots of fun lessons and books read on our special carpet spots! We read Be Who You Are and talked about how we are all special and to love ourselves for who we are.

Then, we drew a self portrait and wrote our names. We will do this at the end of the year to compare our drawings and writing.

This is our Reading Garden where we will all spend time reading independently this year.

We read David Goes to School and then all helped to create this chart of strong vs. weak choices.

We watched a video on Howard B. Wigglebottom and how he becomes a better listener at school.

We read this book and then drew a picture of our families. We talked about how some of live in apartments and some of us live in houses. We talked about how all of our families look different.

We learned about the expectations during choice time. Every day there are 4-5 different choices available. Choice time is a time where students can play together, share, take turns etc. However, playing alone is also ok, too. Here are some photos of students enjoying playing together this week.

We had a special visitor on Thursday! Mrs. Taggert, our new principal, came and read us A Fine, Fine School. The students loved meeting her and knowing who our OB principal is.

In social studies, we talked more about how families are the same and different. Students talked to each other and found ways they were the same and different.

We started our phonics study this week. We start off by doing a name celebration for each student. We talk about how many letters there are, name each letter, and do a chant acting out each letter. Today, we studies Matias' name and did a picture sort of words that start with the /m/ sound and not the /m/ sound.

We started calendar this week, talking about months, days and numbers. Each student's birthday is the buckets next to the calendar. I place them on the calendar when it is their birthday month. Students will get a crown, pencil and birthday button! Unfortunately, treats can not be dispersed due to food allergies.

Choice time on Thursday!

In math this week, we practiced counting and writing the numbers 1 and 2. We talked about pairs and matches. We played a game called Match Me today. Students played the game with a partner. They had to put down colored counters and their partner had to match on his or her paper.

We read My Name is Yoon  today. It is about a little girl from Korea who doesn't like her move to America. She likes the way her name looks in Korean writing, but not English. She learns to become proud of her name at the end. We talked about how each of our names are special and we should all learn to love our names and be proud. Also, we talked about how we should never make fun of anyone's name because it sounds different than ours. We made name necklaces today that your child should have brought home.

Choice time today!

Have a beautiful weekend!
