Week 2- All Are Welcome in KG!

Please read the OB Newsletter. It has important information about upcoming Curriculum Night.

We had another productive week in KG. Students are starting to learn all of our routines and expectations which make our classroom run smoothly. We've talked a lot about the importance of routines and why we have them.

Our reading unit started with learning that we are already readers. We read environmental print including logos. I showed the students logos that they could already read because their brain associated the picture with words!

In phonics, we began studying our friend's names. We talk about how many letters there are, we identify the letters, we sing songs to celebrate them, we stomp the syllables, we talk about lowercase and uppercase letters, practice writing the letters, and identify the letters' sound.

Next, we watch a fun video helping to teach us the letter and sound.

This week, we learned about how to practice our reading lessons with independent reading and partner reading. Students have a special book box full of 5-8 books that they read all week. These books are currently level A books, which are one sentence per page with repetition. Students are looking at pictures and the words or letters on the pages. We reviewed that we read from front to back and that rereading is improtant to store words and information in our brains.

Students have a reading spot and partner for partner reading. They have done an excellent job this week practicing reading!

This week in social studies, we learned about each other's families. We learned about the term sibling and family responsibilities. We talked about things we do at home to be responsible and things we do with our families to have fun. We also talked about the term past, present and future. We created timelines of three events that happened in our lives. Students have a ThinkBook that we do activities in to follow up with our lessons.

Every day we start math with calendar. We talk about the month, day and day of week. This week we've focused on numbers 1-4, counting items and writing these digits. We continue to talk about the terms same and different and comparing objects.

In writing this week, we have focused on letters and letter formation. We created letters with sticks and started forming the letters E and F in our handwriting books.

Every day we have choice time! Students choose four activities to do each day. They work together to build and play. If there is conflict, we practice problem solving together.

The students all made beautiful name plates we hung in the entrance to our classroom.

The superintendent visited us this week and joined us as we read All Are Welcome. It was so fun to have him visit KG! Then we created a poster to signify that we are all welcome in our classroom and at OB regardless of our differences. In KG, we will celebrate our differences!
