Week 4

Please read the OB Newsletter.

Smile! Picture day forms came home today. Please take a took and decide if you want to purchase pictures online or send in payment.

We started our day today with our morning meeting. We gave a compliment to each peer and then talked about any issues we were having. One concern that came up were some people felt left out on the playground. We talked about the importance of including everyone and making sure feelings are not hurt outside at recess. Then we read, My Day Is Ruined. He learned that things can't always go the way we want them to go. I introduced the size of problem charts and we talked about having equal reactions to our problems. I said most kindergarten problems are level 1 problems that we need to try and solve ourselves.

In our Second Steps program, we learned this week about focusing. We talked about losing our focus and what we can do to get back on track. This boy didn't hear directions and was confused about what to do. We brainstormed what he could do.

Reading: This week we learned more about reading storybooks. We learned that we look at pictures, hear stories and remember the words. We can read more and more of the exact words in a book when we have heard it multiple times. We learned to try and talk like the characters in the story and to make sure the words we may are matching the pictures. The students read The Three Billy Goat Gruff to their partner using more and more of the exact words and read with great expression.

Literacy Centers: Students worked in literacy centers this week. The purpose is to practice reading skills and strategies and be exposed to print while I will be able to pull small groups for guided reading. Students read books on the iPad on the app Epic!, play a word building game on OSMO, played some games learning our letter and letter sounds, built letters with sticks and wrote on chalkboards, listened to stories on CD, explored books independently, sight word center focusing on oru two words of the week and an art center that usually involves writing and coloring/painting.

Counselor Visit: Mrs. Arnold, our full time counselor, came in to introduce herself and tell us that she is here to help us at OB. We even took a field trip to her office. She spent the time getting to know each student and finding a connection with them. She's the best!

Mrs. Lombardo Visit: Mrs. Lombardo came today to do a creative thinking activity with us. She will come once a week for the first semester to do activities with the students. These activities are part of the screening process for the gifted program that begins in first grade.

Math: In math, we continue to do calendar to start. We focused on counting and writing numbers 1-6 this week. We also continued talking about the language concepts same and different.

We made trains of six people and traveled around the track!

Writing: We started writing this week by talking about what a narrative is. I modeled thinking of something that has happened in the past. Then, I drew a picture of my family blackberry picking. I went through and modeled stretching out words trying to label things in the picture. Then, the students went back to their seats and worked on their own narrative.

The next two weeks are COLOR WEEKS! A flyer came home today to put on the fridge. It is fun for us all to match at school in kindergarten.

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!
