Week 15

Second Steps: This week we talked about how to calm down when we are having overwhelming feelings. We reviewed our poster again and practiced deep belly breathing by putting our hands on our belly. The poster tells students to stop and recognize how they are feeling and name it. Then calm down by counting, breathing or using positive self talk.

On Friday we read Ricky Sticky Fingers.  This book is about honesty. Ricky had a difficult time taking things that were not his. He took his friends gum and slime balls and lied about it to his mom and teacher. Then, someone stole his bike and he understood how it felt to lose something you love. He was able to apologize to those he had hurt and learn to not take things that didn't belong to him.

Math: In math this week we continued to become experts at using ten frames up to the number 20. Students showed they have a solid understanding of how they work. We did some extension activities this week where the ten frames were complete and they had to figure out how many more were needed to make 10 or 20.  Ex: 11+ __ = 20

In calendar, we now use ten frames to make the day of the month. This is the example from Friday.

Brain Break: GoNoodle helped us take some dance breaks this week!

Reading: This week we learned a lot about why it is important to reread our books. We created this chart below. I modeled reading a book three times and then they practiced in their own book books, with the books that are the right fit for them.

During interactive writing almost everyday, we write one sentence together using our sight words. Students write the words on the board while the rest write it in the air or on the carpet.

We go through flashcards of our sight words we have covered so far on the Smartboard every day.

We read two short passages daily that focus on our two sight words each week.

Writing: This week we talked about editing and how writers go through lots of editing to make their story the best it can be. All the students watched me as I edited my story and then they received their own Writer's Checklist and tried editing their stories. Students are to circle no if they did not do this in their stories, then go back and fix it and change it to yes when completed. Students hung up their strongest pattern book each student created.

In phonics, we also continue to practice stretching out our words, hearing all the sounds including blends now at the beginning of words, vowel sound and ending sounds. Students come up to the board and drag the letters to create the word given.
